Newport Harbor Wins Summer Football Title

Newport Harbor High won the football championship at the L.A. Watts Summer Games Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Josiah Fredriksen, Newport Harbor’s quarterback, led the Sailors to a 19-6 victory over Compton Dominguez in the final of the seven-on-seven passing tournament. Fredriksen also was voted the tournament’s most valuable player.

In other sports, Foothill advanced to the final in baseball, where it lost to Moreno Valley Canyon Springs, 3-2.

Andre Holmes, a two-time J.C. Grid-Wire All-American defensive back from Rancho Santiago, has signed with Fairmont State, a Division II school in West Virginia.

Holmes, from Orange High, also was the Mission Conference Central Division defensive player of the year in 1994 and an all-conference pick last season when he had three sacks, four interceptions and 26 unassisted tackles.

Jason Pacourek, an inside linebacker from Rancho Santiago, signed with Division II New Haven (Conn.). Pacourek, from Esperanza High, led the team with eight sacks.

Brent Howes, center fielder on Rancho Santiago’s baseball team that won the state title last spring, has signed with Brigham Young. He is from Sunny Hills High.

Linda Bohm has taken over as women’s volleyball coach at Cypress College. Bohm replaces Gerry Livsey, who stepped down for at least one season.

Bohm spent the last six seasons at La Mirada High, where her teams won five Suburban League titles and a Southern Section championship in 1993.
