Panel to Discuss Sex Education Programs

Share

A panel of teens, educators and therapists will gather today at the Center Club for a discussion about sex education programs in county schools, organizers said.

Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties hopes to determine exactly what students are learning about unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, single parenthood and sexual orientation, said Amber Nelson, a spokeswoman for the organization.

“Each of these professionals will be giving their talk about how things should be, and the students will explain how things really are,” Nelson said.

Students participating in the panel are juniors and seniors from Capistrano Valley, Los Alamitos, Valley View and Troy high schools.

Planned Parenthood wants to use the discussion as a source of information, not advocacy.

“We’re trying to stay away from the political end of it and find out what’s really going down,” Nelson said. “A lot of parents don’t know what’s going on with their kids.”

The event, free and open to the public, will begin at 5:30 p.m. The Center Club is at 650 Town Center Drive.
