Tatrai’s Lead Grows in Bicycle Race

Two riders have broken out in front a little more than 30 hours into the the Race Across America bicycle race.

Gerry Tatrai of Australia held the overall lead at the ninth time station, in Cutter, Ariz. He passed through the town, which is 557 miles into the 2,900-mile race, at 5:40 p.m. Friday.

Seana Hogan of San Jose remained in second but was 1 hour six minutes back. She was 12 minutes off the lead near the end of the first day.

Tatrai and Hogan were the only riders to reach the ninth time station.

Tom Buckley of Keokuk, Iowa was in third at time station No. 8 in Superior, Ariz.

Steve Born of Ketchum, Idaho, was in fourth, Rob Kish of Port Orange, Fla., was in fifth, Harold Trease of Jemez Springs, N.M., was in sixth and Danny Chew of Pittsburgh was in seventh.

The U.S. men’s junior national water polo team moved into the championship game of the Junior Pan American Games in Havana after beating Brazil, 9-6, Friday.

Tony Azevedo of Long Beach Wilson High scored four goals and Matt Flesher of Brea Olinda High added two for the United States (6-0-1).

The U.S. defeated Puerto Rico, 8-6, Thursday.

The U.S. held a 6-2 advantage at halftime, but gave up four unanswered goals in the third quarter. Azevedo, scored two of his game-high four goals in the fourth quarter. He has a tournament-high 27 goals.

Brian Sinay of Irvine lost in the third round of match play in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Lake Forest, Ill. Thomas Lee of Tenafly, N.J., ousted Sinay, a junior at University High, 3-2.

James Oh of Lakewood High reached the semifinals with two victories Friday. Nick Seymour, a recent graduate of Foothill, lost Thursday in the second round of match play.

Steve Runge of Mission Viejo shot 66 to move into a tie for second place in the Long Beach Open at El Dorado and Recreation Park. Runge played El Dorado in six-under in the second round and has a 133 total. John Johnson of Ventura leads by one. Brian Carson of Westminster is three back and Kirk Rose of Newport Beach trails by four.

First-round leader Chris Miyahara of Fountain Valley shot 75 at El Dorado and trails by seven.

Kristin Littell and Michael Hilde of the Mission Viejo Nadadores won events at the U.S. Zone E Junior National qualifying meet at the Mission Viejo Aquatics Center.

Littell took first in the girls’ 13 and under platform and Hilde was first in the boys’ 13 and under platform.
