A judge gave final approval to the record $34-million payment that Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors is making to settle a sexual harassment case involving female workers at a factory in Normal, Ill.

U.S. District Judge Joe Billy McDade said Tuesday that the settlement, announced June 11, is fair and equitable for the female employees and the general public.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Mitsubishi’s North American division in April 1996.

The settlement--three times the largest amount paid in a government sexual harassment case--contains no admission of wrongdoing.
