Matadors Pitch In, Sweep Sacramento
Tara Glaister and Cheri Shinn limited Cal State Sacramento to one run and nine hits Saturday, leading Cal State Northridge to 3-0 and 11-1 victories and a sweep of a Big West Conference softball doubleheader at Cal State Sacramento.
Glaister (9-6) pitched a four-hitter and struck out 11 in the opener.
Northridge (19-11-1, 6-3-1 in conference play) broke the first game open with a three-run sixth. Shinn tripled home the first run, Augrista Belford followed with a double, scoring Shinn, and Belford later scored on a throwing error.
Shinn (7-5) pitched a five-hitter and had a double, single and drove in two runs in the second game.
Ashlie Hayes had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs, and Jessica Creith and Belford each had two hits in the nightcap.
In another softball game:
Valley 7, Pierce 5--Shante Brown hit a three-run double and Norma Dorado had a triple and a run-scoring single for the Monarchs (11-6, 3-1) in a Western State Conference South Division victory at Pierce.
Gina Perez (3-2) and Bonnie Lehigh combined on a three-hitter for Valley. Perez pitched 4 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking four, while Lehigh struck out two and walked one without allowing a hit.
BASEBALL
Pepperdine 17-19, Portland 6-7--Steve Zorn had six hits and drove in six runs, and the Waves pounded 37 hits in a doubleheader at Portland.
Zorn had a double and two RBIs in the opener, and added a home run and four RBIs in the second game.
Dane Sardinha hit three home runs in the two games, scored five runs and drove in four, and Dave Sudgen had four hits, two RBIs and scored five runs for Pepperdine (19-14).
Dave Matranga collected four hits, including a home run, four runs and three RBIs for the Waves.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
CS Northridge d. UC San Diego, 15-6, 15-3, 15-3--Chad Strickland had 16 kills and hit a career-high .652 for the Matadors in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory at Northridge.
John Baxter had 31 assists for the Matadors (8-12, 4-11), who hit a season-high .462 against the Tritons (3-17, 0-16).
MEN’S TENNIS
George Fox 4, Cal Lutheran 3--Jenia Karimov (18-0), ranked No. 1 in the West Region, registered a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Todd Hammans but the Kingsmen lost at Cal Lutheran.
Earlier in the day, the Kingsmen defeated LaVerne, 6-1, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match, ending a 12-match losing streak.
Pepperdine 6, Fresno State 1--Michael Jessup and Eni Ghidirmic sparked the 10th-ranked Waves (18-5) at Pepperdine.
Jessup defeated Oliver Le Jeune, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, and Ghidirmic downed P.J. Dormire, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Pepperdine 7, Harvard 2--Angela Lawrence and Zsofia Csapo led the 13th-ranked Waves (15-5) at Pepperdine.
Lawrence defeated Ivy Wang, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1 singles and Csapo downed Rosemary She, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.
