USC Women Open With 71-54 Win

Center Adrain Williams and forward Tashara Carter both had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the USC women’s basketball team to a season-opening 71-54 victory over Boise State before 475 at Lyon Center on Thursday night.

USC trailed at halftime, 33-31, and didn’t take the lead for good until there was 15:24 left when guard Tiffany Elmore’s layup made the score 39-38.

USC was ahead by only one point with seven minutes left when Williams followed up two free throws with a steal and layup that produced a 53-48 lead. Boise State (1-1) could get no closer.

“Our conditioning came through for us,” USC Coach Chris Gobrecht said. “We seemed to have more than them coming down the stretch. We had poise and made the right adjustments.”

Guard Kristin Clark led USC with 15 points, Elmore had 11 points, and forward Tiffany Washington had eight points and nine rebounds.

Yvette Barrios was the only Boise State player to score in double figures, getting 21 points.

USC shot 37%, while Boise State made only four of 25 shots in the second half to finish at 31.5%.
