FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Fishing is slow but striped bass are providing some action. Scott Ross, Sylmar, 14-pound striper on night crawler at the dam. Eddie Bastedo, Palmdale, 11 1/2-pound striper on an anchovy at the dam. Top catch, a 9-6 largemouth bass by Nancy Werth, Sylmar, on a mudsucker. Trout are biting sporadically in the lower lake.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass have moved a little deeper but there are some boils. Surface plugs and anchovies are getting fish up to seven pounds. Catfish are active around the island, feeding mostly on anchovies. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are biting sporadically on plastic worms and night crawlers.

LAKE PIRU--Trout biting on trolled Needlefish to about 30 feet. Yellow Power Bait isn’t a bad choice either. Small bass are biting as well.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout and bass are providing most action, with trout averaging a hefty two-plus pounds. Bass are on the small side, but active at 35-40 feet. Crankbaits getting most.

CASITAS LAKE--Limits of trout are being filled daily, rainbow Power Bait taking most. Catfish and bass are biting too. A 22-pound catfish was caught on mackerel by Ron Briggs, Ojai, and two eight-pound bass were caught on Stocker Trout lures by Rod Thigpen, Santa Paula.

IRVINE LAKE--Trophy-sized trout stocked recently so this lake offers a good chance for those seeking to land their first real lunkers. Many weigh more than 10 pounds, and a few, according to lake officials, are closer to 25. Trolled Rapalas, Roostertails and Kastmasters will probably take some of these.

CORONA LAKE--A 15-pound rainbow trout was caught by Mike Daniels, Redlands, on a Rapala near the trees. A few others came in at more than 10 pounds. Fishing is pretty good.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--The trout bite remains good, and many of the fish are on the heavy side. Top catch, a 12-pound 7-ounce trout by Keith Hyun, Fontana, on salmon eggs near the dock. Crappies are biting too.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish are sluggish and bass are remaining almost completely out of sight, but that matters little because trout season has opened after extensive stocking of fish trucked in from Utah.

LAKE PERRIS--Lots of small bass and an occasional lunker. Lee Pittman, Riverside, 8-pound 6-ounce bass on a crawdad at Sail Cove. Pittman also reported catching an 11-pounder at night. Trout fishing is fair near the dam, with Power Bait and other standard stuff getting an occasional fish.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass continue to be caught on the surface by those using plugs and live shad. Catfish are active at the dam and trout were stocked Thursday at Ramp 2.

BIG BEAR LAKE--Cold nighttime temperatures are icing the edges and the end of the season is near. But those still fishing are often getting limits of trout, using night crawler-flasher combos and rainbow glitter Power Bait.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--Trout fishermen are doing fair from shore with Power Bait and Roostertails, and trollers using Rapalas are getting lots of strikes. Miller and Cleghorn canyons remain the best areas. Some largemouth bass and catfish. A few striped bass are even showing. Lure maker and longtime Silverwood regular Greg Silks will give a free seminar Saturday at 10:30 am. Details: (760) 389-2281.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Miramar and Murray are offering pretty good trout fishing, with some fish topping three pounds. San Vicente is fair for bluegills and OK for bass. El Capitan is serving up some bass, but things are slow.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Boaters and shore casters are taking lots of trout. Ken Frattini and Paul Fisher, Vista, caught eight totaling 18 pounds on Trout Teasers and Kastmasters.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--15 anglers (2 boats): 4 calico bass, 1 sand bass, 3 sculpin, 1 lingcod, 230 rockfish.

VENTURA (Capt. Hook’s)--11 anglers (1 boat): 12 rockfish, 5 sculpin, 2 whitefish, 9 yellowtail, 1 lingcod, 5 bonito.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--31 anglers (3 boats): 30 yellowtail, 2 white sea bass, 1 halibut, 5 red snapper, 1 rockfish, 4 sculpin, 1 sheephead, 50 sole, 66 whitefish, 1 cabezon, 1 black sea bass (released). (Gold Coast)--15 anglers (1 boat): 6 sand bass, 20 red snapper, 70 rockfish, 33 sculpin, 7 yellowtail.

MARINA DEL REY--57 anglers (3 boats): 28 halibut, 35 sand bass, 50 sculpin.

REDONDO--31 anglers (3 boats): 4 sand bass, 8 halibut, 13 sculpin, 5 whitefish, 1 sheephead, 50 mackerel, 109 rockfish.

SAN PEDRO (22nd St. Landing)--16 anglers (1 boat): 14 yellowtail, 9 calico bass, 74 barracuda, 3 sand bass, 3 sheephead.
