New Crosswalk to Be Patrolled

Sheriff’s deputies will greet the new school year by handing out tickets to pedestrians and motorists who don’t observe a new crosswalk recently installed in front of Adolfo Camarillo High School.

Hoping to avert accidents, the City Council approved a crosswalk at the location and agreed to foot the $7,000 to $10,000 bill for hiring a crossing guard.

The effectiveness of the walkway depends on whether students obey the guard, said Deputy John Popp of the Sheriff’s Department’s traffic division.

A motorcycle deputy periodically will be stationed outside the school ensuring that students cross where they’re supposed to, he said. Those who don’t will face citations for impeding traffic, which can cost as much as $100 each.

For the first week, deputies will hand out warnings to students and drivers. After that, Popp said, violators will cited.

Crossing Mission Oaks Boulevard has long been an issue of concern. Students, for whom parking is limited, frequently resort to a dirt field across the road from the school. Instead of using the light at Adolfo Road, they often take the shortest route across Mission Oaks.

“With the guard, it might help them get across quicker and easier and not disrupt traffic flow so,” Popp said.

About 2,600 students are enrolled for the 2000-01 school year, creating the need for a safe and reliable way for them to cross the boulevard, he added.
