Bolsa Grande Drops Softball For Season
Citing too few players and concerns about safety, Bolsa Grande softball Coach Kurt Parker said Sunday his school will not field a team this season.
“Girls who have never competed in their lives, who have never picked up a softball until three weeks ago, were going to make the varsity,” Parker said.
No more than 16 players showed up at any practice, and only two junior varsity-level players showed any consistency in attendance, Parker said.
Safety was a greater concern.
“They’re nice girls, but we didn’t have girls who had an understanding of the rules and the concept of safety,” Parker said. “We had girls walking into an occupied on-deck circle, things that you learn when you’re 8. With one week to go, I felt there was a safety issue.”
Bolsa Grande did not win a game last season, and had only one player returning from that team. The school dissolved the junior varsity program on Wednesday.
