Film Screening

The Alex Film Society screens the 1940 classic “The Grapes of Wrath,” starring Henry Fonda, on Saturday in Glendale. Director John Ford’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Depression-era novel tells the story of the Joad family’s trek from the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma to California. Fonda’s performance is considered by many to be the best of his long, illustrious career. Although nominated for the best actor Oscar, Fonda lost to his longtime friend James Stewart, who won for his performance in “The Philadelphia Story.” In all, “The Grapes of Wrath” received seven Oscar nominations, but won just two--best director for Ford and best supporting actress for Jane Darwell. Surviving cast members Dorris Bowdon, Darryl Hickman and Shirley Mills will be on hand to talk with film critic Leonard Maltin at the evening screening.
