From Times Wire Reports

Britain introduced new measures to contain what it described as a worrying outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in northern England, saying some of the country’s largest pig herds were under threat.

The outbreak in North Yorkshire, which has come months after swaths of the country had in effect been quarantined, has prompted fears that the epidemic will run into the colder months, when animals in barns may be exposed to a high risk of infection.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said vehicles traveling to the 2,700 farms in the area would have to be licensed, and milk tankers and some trucks would be accompanied by officials, who would check that vehicles had been disinfected.
