Honduras Stuns Brazil

Honduras made history with a stunning 2-0 victory over Brazil on Monday to advance to the semifinals of the Copa America tournament at Manizales, Colombia.

It was Honduras’ first victory against the four-time World Cup champion and continued its amazing run in the continent’s oldest soccer tournament.

Saul Martinez caused an own-goal by Belletti and scored one of his own in injury time for Honduras, while goalie Noel Valladares shut down the Brazilian attack to eliminate the defending Cup champions.

Honduras plays host Colombia on Thursday. Mexico plays Uruguay on Wednesday in the other semifinal.

The Hondurans, late tournament replacements for Argentina, already had earned a reputation as giant killers after upsetting Bolivia and Uruguay in the first round.

In three previous encounters, Brazil had a tie and two victories against Honduras by a combined score of 14-3.

Colombia 3, Peru 0--Victor Aristizabal scored twice at Armenia to lead Colombia over Peru and advance the hosts to the semifinals.

Colombia has outscored opponents, 8-0, in the tournament. Aristizabal tied Costa Rica’s Paulo Wanchope for the tournament scoring lead with five goals.
