Burk Takes Sponsor to Task
If you have lost track of Martha Burk, the chair of the National Council of Women’s Organizations was back at it again Friday, aiming another barb at Augusta National Golf Club.
Burk, who is leading a campaign to force the club that is host of the Masters to admit a female member, issued a statement congratulating Annika Sorenstam while criticizing Colonial sponsor Bank of America.
Burk said it was “unacceptable” that Bank of America, which she said will benefit from Sorenstam’s playing in the tournament, supports sex discrimination because several of its officers and directors are members at Augusta National.
“It is clear that these corporate executives are willing to profit from [her] talent and labor, but their memberships send a very public message they do not consider women their equals. The Bank of America should be ashamed for engaging in this blatant hypocrisy.”
