MetroStars Post Fifth Straight Win

Defender Steve Jolley scored with six minutes remaining to help the New York-New Jersey MetroStars defeat the Dallas Burn, 2-1, before 9,110 at East Rutherford, N.J., to post their fifth consecutive Major League Soccer victory.

Clint Mathis scored the first goal for the MetroStars (5-1-1), and his deflected free kick rolled to Jolley, setting up the winner.

Jason Kreis scored for Dallas (0-3-3), ending MetroStar goalkeeper Tim Howard’s shutout streak at 292 minutes.

New England 3, Columbus 2 -- Taylor Twellman scored in the 89th minute and Brain Kamler had two goals for the Revolution (4-2-2) before 13,186 at Columbus, Ohio. New England remained two points behind the first-place MetroStars in the Eastern Division. Ross Pauley and Brian Dunseth scored for Columbus (3-3-2).

Washington 4, New York 0 -- Mia Hamm scored two goals and added an assist for the Freedom in a Women’s United Soccer Assn. game before 5,347 at Uniondale, N.Y. Lindsay Stoecker and Casey Zimny also scored for league-leading Washington (5-1-1). New York is 3-5.

San Diego 2, Carolina 1 -- Aly Wagner shot between two defenders and scored in the 78th minute to break a 1-1 tie and give the Spirit the victory before 5,809 at Cary, N.C. Julie Foudy also scored for the Spirit (3-1-3). Carolina is 1-5.

San Jose 2, Philadelphia 0 -- Brazilian star Pretinha scored twice for the CyberRays (4-3) before 5,517 at Villanova, Pa. LaKeysia Beene recorded her fourth shutout for San Jose. Philadelphia is 1-5.
