TODAY’S GAME
No. 4 KANSAS vs. No. 3 GEORGIA TECH
* Site: St. Louis.
* Time: 11:40 a.m. PST.
* What to watch for: B.J. Elder, Georgia Tech’s leading scorer with a 15.8 average, is questionable after spraining his right ankle Friday and sitting out most of a 62-57 victory over Nevada. If he’s unable to play, it will place more of a burden on the rest of a Yellow Jacket lineup that has struggled offensively in the NCAA tournament. Kansas has yet to be challenged in the tournament, posting double-digit victories over Illinois Chicago and Pacific before shredding Alabama Birmingham’s press Friday in a 100-74 rout. The Jayhawks have gotten strong play from junior forward Wayne Simien (18.0 points, 9.2 rebounds) and freshman guard J.R. Giddens, who has made 19 of 28 shots from the field in the tournament. Kansas will benefit from playing close to home and having the majority of fans in a crowd expected to exceed 30,000 in Edward Jones Dome.
* Key to the game: If Kansas guards Aaron Miles and Keith Langford play as well as they did Friday, when they combined for 15 assists and had success breaking Alabama Birmingham’s vaunted press, the Jayhawks will be tough to beat. Georgia Tech thrives on its defense and needs turnovers to create fast-break opportunities.
* Projected winner: Kansas.
