Texas El Paso Gets Past Houston, 44-41

Reagan Schneider kicked a team-record five field goals, including a 42-yarder in double overtime, then Quintin Demps intercepted a pass near the goal line Friday night to secure Texas El Paso’s 44-41 victory over Houston at El Paso.

Jordan Palmer, the younger brother of former USC Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer, guided the Miners, 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Conference USA, to scores on six consecutive possessions, turning a 19-5 deficit into a 34-26 lead. But the Cougars (1-2, 0-1) rallied and forced overtime.

Two of Palmer’s passes were intercepted in the first half.

Oregon freshman tailback Jonathan Stewart and defensive end Devan Long are questionable for today’s game against No. 23 Fresno State at Eugene, Ore. Stewart sprained his ankle last Saturday against Montana. Long has a knee injury.

Washington will play Idaho for the 38th time in a series that dates to 1900, with the Huskies holding a 33-2-2 advantage. But this could be the Vandals’ best chance at victory in the series since their last win in 1905. It also could be Washington’s best chance at victory this season. The Huskies were thrashed last Saturday by California, 56-17.

No. 15 California puts its eight-game home winning streak on the line today against Illinois, which is off to a surprising 2-0 start. Bear tailback Marshawn Lynch is not expected to play because of a broken finger.

No. 18 Arizona State will try to rebound from a heartbreaking loss to Louisiana State when Northwestern visits Tempe, Ariz., tonight. The Sun Devils will try to patch a defense that gave up several big plays in the second half of the 35-31 loss to the No. 3 Tigers.

Former UCLA quarterback Matt Moore will lead Oregon State into a nonconference game against No. 11 Louisville. The Beavers are coming off a 30-27 victory over Boise State.

Arizona will be without starting defensive ends Marcus Smith and Copeland Bryant because of injuries for tonight’s game against No. 12 Purdue.
