Take-Away Looks Bad in UCLA Record

Share

I have attended UCLA football games for over 50 years, I have been a season-ticket holder since the Bruins moved to the Rose Bowl, and I am now totally disgusted and outraged with the program.

The rescinding of Andrew Baumgartner’s athletic scholarship [Aug. 13] is abominable. To couch the excuse as building for the future with many unproven freshmen defies logic and reason. I’m wondering how many of those recruits even will be in school two years from now.

By any measure, Karl Dorrell is neither the best nor worst coach to ever guide the Bruins, but when it comes to style and class, Dorrell is rock bottom.

It is amazing to me that schools such as UCLA claim to have “student-athletes,” yet pull the scholarship from a student majoring in math and economics, with a high grade-point average, on track to graduate, who produced on the field last year.

The scholarship will be filled by, who? An athlete who probably wouldn’t be admitted to UCLA without athletic ability. Someone who will fulfill a football need but never graduate.

UCLA’s athletic director complains about respect toward the football program. Respect for what? A team that shows no sense of responsibility for the players, yet still does not come through on the field when it counts.

Being a Bruin alum, I was shocked, reading your article about UCLA rescinding Andrew Baumgartner’s scholarship. I don’t care what the reason is. What we give, we do not take away. Everyone knows this. Shame on you, Bruins.

Shame on Karl Dorrell for not having the dignity to speak to the young man face to face about his scholarship. Great coaches are teachers, not just on the field of play but in the arena of life. Karl needs to take lessons from Coach Wooden, who makes us all proud to be Bruins. Right now I cannot say the same about Karl Dorrell.
