DaimlerChrysler to lay off 4,000 at truck plants

From Bloomberg News

DaimlerChrysler is preparing to lay off 4,000 workers at its truck unit in North America because it expects sales to slump next year.

That would be about 16% of the North American workforce at the truck and bus unit.

Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche is bracing his North American unit for a sales decline because buyers accelerated truck purchases this year before new emission standards and higher prices take effect Jan. 1.

The automaker already has told 800 employees at a Freightliner plant in St. Thomas, Canada, that they would be laid off starting in March.
