Company of Angels homeless

SEVENTEEN years after an arson fire forced its move from Hollywood to a Silver Lake area theater space, Company of Angels, the city’s oldest continually operating small theater troupe, is homeless.

Known for eclectic productions of new and classic works, the group, an L.A. staple for 49 years, was unable to reach a lease agreement with the Lyric-Hyperion building’s new owners, said Lee Sherman, associate artistic director. “Our last date in the space is Nov. 30.”

Until the 11th hour, the company had hoped to negotiate an arrangement to stay, so its search for new digs is just beginning, Sherman said, but “we have a couple of things brewing.”

One possibility is “a little bit outside L.A., but we don’t want to travel far, because we have such a legacy within the L.A. area.”

A partnership with another small theater is also on the table, Sherman said.

Company of Angels’ final production in the Silverlake space is Caleen Sinnette Jennings’ “Playing Juliet, Casting Othello,” running through Oct. 28.
