WHEN a friend was leading a photography tour of Myanmar in January, Mary Carlota Woodward signed on. And then she bought a camera -- a Canon Digital Rebel. This girl, photographed in Mandalay, has had her face decorated with thanakha, a yellowish paste made from tree bark that’s used as makeup and skin protection. But its application is not typically so ornate. “It was really rather amazing. Some woman had the innate artistry to decorate her daughter,” said Woodward, who lives in L.A.
