Nation joins regional pact

Honduras, long considered a U.S. ally, joined a Latin American pact pushed by Venezuela as a way to contain U.S. influence in the region.

Honduras, a member of a free trade pact between Central America and the United States, joined the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas.

President Manuel Zelaya has been drifting toward closer ties with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a U.S. foe.
