A guilty pope?

Re “A papal message of unity from Australia,” July 20

“Those responsible for these evils must be brought to justice,” Pope Benedict XVI told an audience in Australia last weekend.

The pope, then known as Cardinal Ratzinger, was the head of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith under Pope John Paul II. Ratzinger was the Vatican official responsible for handling complaints of child sexual abuse.

In this position, many believe, Ratzinger covered up the sexual abuse problem and kept it from being properly handled -- allowing continuing sexual abuse to go unaddressed by the highest levels of the Roman Catholic Church for many years.

Yes, those responsible for the sexual abuse must be brought to justice. Until Pope Benedict is held accountable for his complicity, justice will not have been served.
