From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The U.S. government is investigating 2007-08 model year Hyundai Elantra compact cars after receiving reports of engines stalling, officials said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its website that its preliminary investigation involved about 167,000 Elantras. The agency said it had received four reports of engine stalls because of problems with the vehicle’s fuel pump module.

Hyundai Motor Co. spokesman Miles Johnson said it was too early in the process to draw any conclusions about the cars’ safety. He said Hyundai was cooperating with the safety agency on the investigation.
