‘Small Schools’ is a big deal

Re “Small-schools statement passes,” June 26

I am disappointed to see that The Times references the Los Angeles Board of Education’s Small Schools II resolution as a “statement.” It is much more.

The board’s 6-1 vote directs the superintendent to begin the planning process to convert all high-priority schools and middle schools into small schools of no more than 500 students during the first phase (implementation will start no later than 2010) and to expand this initiative to other schools by 2020.

This is clearly more than a statement and a directive to move forward.
