Gunman fires on deputies

Share

A gunman armed with a high-caliber rifle traded fire with sheriff’s deputies Tuesday night on a street in Compton before escaping, authorities said.

No one was injured in the shooting, which started when the man opened fire on deputies after they spotted him at Alondra Boulevard and Grandee Avenue about 8:30 p.m., said the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators set up a perimeter after the shooting, evacuated about 100 people from a nearby apartment building and detained 11 people for questioning.

Investigators also recovered an AK-47-type rifle, authorities said. Residents were allowed to return Wednesday morning.

No arrests had been made, and investigators had not released a suspect description.
