An appeal of the state Coastal Commission’s decision to reject a toll road through San Onofre State Beach has resulted in more than 5,000 public comments in the first three days of the comment period, a federal official said Thursday.

The public comment period began Monday, and comments will be accepted until May 28, said a spokesman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is handling the appeal.

A decision on the appeal is expected by January. At an estimated cost of $875 million, the proposed Foothill South tollway would be the final link in Orange County’s network of toll roads. It would run 16 miles from Oso Parkway in Rancho Santa Margarita to Interstate 5 at Basilone Road, south of San Clemente.
