A nanny pulled a 2-year-old girl from the jaws of a coyote Friday when the animal attacked the toddler and tried to carry her away in its mouth, officials said.

The girl was playing in a sandbox at Altura Park about 10:30 a.m., when the caretaker heard screaming and saw the coyote with the child, officials said.

The baby-sitter pulled the child away from the animal, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. The coyote then ran into nearby brush.

The child, who suffered wounds to her buttocks, was taken to Chino Valley Medical Center and later released, said Anne Marie Robertson, director of nursing. The girl was later taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center to receive the rabies vaccine.

San Bernardino County Animal Control and the state Department of Fish and Game were searching for the animal, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
