Eight congressmen urged the U.S. secretary of Commerce on Wednesday to overturn the state Coastal Commission’s ruling against a proposed toll road that would cut through San Onofre State Beach.

The eight are Gary Miller (R-Diamond Bar), Ken Calvert (R-Corona), John Campbell (R-Irvine), Ed Royce (R-Fullerton), Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach), Darrell Issa (R-Vista), Duncan Hunter (R-Alpine) and Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley).

The Transportation Corridor Agencies, which wants to build the road to relieve congestion in south Orange County, has appealed the commission’s decision to the Commerce Department. A decision is pending.

According to a statement from the congressmen, the commission failed to recognize years of study for the roadway to protect the environment and valuable state park and coastal resources.
