Home of the Week: Santa Monica Canyon contemporary

Share

A blend of steel, copper and glass frames a Santa Monica Canyon contemporary built by Los Angeles architects Mark Cigolle and Kim Coleman originally as a live-work space for their young family.

Constructed in 1992, the house features a top-level atelier that can be used as an office, a gym or an art gallery. A sliding glass door leads to a deck with an outdoor shower, and across to a guest suite with a bathroom. Below are family living spaces and bedrooms.

The neighborhood, known as an artists’ and entertainment-industry enclave, offers direct access to the beach and the canyon forests nearby.

“My wife and I live in the canyon and walked by the house for several years,” says owner Steve Richards, an entertainment executive. “We thought it was a unique house, architecturally, and that it would be perfect because we have two kids. When we bought it, it needed some work, so we did a lot of upgrades. By the time it was finished, we had second thoughts and decided to stay in our current house.”

Extensive renovations were done, with improvements to the kitchen, flooring, pool and landscaping. Rooms have access to the outdoors, with gardens, large decks or terraces offering ocean or canyon views.

The main level of the house features a living room with a fireplace that overlooks the backyard, a lap pool and an outdoor room that extends underneath part of the house. Off the living room are a library and a half bathroom.

Across from the living room is a dining room that flows into an eat-in kitchen with an ocean view. The kitchen features a marble countertop island and large, glass-front cupboards.

The level above features a family/media room and kitchenette for entertaining. Adjacent are a guest bedroom and bathroom. A hallway with built-in storage space leads to the guest-suite tower opposite the atelier.

The level below the main living space features the master suite with a fireplace and multiple balconies. The master bathroom includes an open shower stall, a spa tub and a pair of dressing areas.

On the other side of the master suite is an oversize children’s bedroom, play area and two bathrooms decorated with colorful tiles.
