Get out the red pens: It’s a ‘Game of Thrones’ coloring book

Share

Winter is coming. Get your red pens ready.

Bantam Books announced Monday that it will publish a “Game of Thrones” coloring book from George R.R. Martin, author of the “Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy series. It’s being touted as an “adult coloring book,” which will not come as a surprise to anyone familiar with Martin’s famously violent books or the somehow even more violent HBO show based on them.

Coloring books marketed toward adults are a new mini-craze in the publishing industry. Artist Johanna Basford has topped bestseller lists with her coloring books, “Secret Garden” and “Enchanted Forest.” However, the new adult coloring books have been marketed as relaxing, even therapeutic. Although there is not yet any art available for the “Game of Thrones” coloring book, presumably it will be a little less restful.

Bantam said the book “will feature 45 original black and white illustrations, inspired by characters, scenes, locations and other iconic images from Martin’s wildly successful ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series.” It is tentatively scheduled for release in the fall.

There are also coloring books, not necessarily aimed at adults, featuring presidential candidates such as Ted Cruz and Hillary Rodham Clinton. (In the latter, you can color the former secretary of State’s pantsuits with whichever shade you like.) And then there’s “Color Me Drunk” and “Unicorns Are Jerks,” neither of which are probably appropriate for your kindergartner.

There’s no telling whether Martin’s coloring book will contain unicorns, jerky or otherwise. But based on the latest episode of “Game of Thrones” (warning: the link contains spoilers), users might want to stock up on fiery orange and, of course, blood red.
