Shonda Rhimes to publish a book in 2015 with Simon & Schuster
Award-winning television show creator Shonda Rhimes will publish her first book in 2015 with Simon & Schuster, the publisher announced Wednesday. Rhimes, one of the leading women in television, will write about both her professional and family life. The as-yet-untitled book will be part memoir, part inspiration and part advice.
“Simon and Schuster is crazy for giving me a book deal as I am clearly in no position to be handing out wisdom,” Rhimes said in the release about the book. “But I have made a lot of mistakes as a single mother and as a working mother and as a sleepless mother and as a dating mother. And I did all of it while running a bunch of TV shows. So I’m going to write about that and hope my kids don’t use it against me in therapy later.”
Rhimes is the creator of the television shows “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice.” “Scandal” is a hit in its third season; “Grey’s Anatomy” has filmed 200 episodes.
For her work, Rhimes has won a Golden Globe, been nominated for a number of Emmys, and has a raft of other awards. Earlier this year she was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people -- for the second time -- and among her many honors is being a trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, to which she was named by President Obama.
What will be her writing approach? After thanking Simon & Schuster for the book deal on Twitter, Rhimes retweeted a quote from James Baldwin: “I will not tell another writer what to write. If you don’t like their alternative, write yours” -- with the additional note, “PREACH!”
