LAX shooting could affect air travel across nation

A shooting at Los Angeles International Airport grounded flights at the nation’s sixth-busiest airport Friday, but the situation in the early going had yet to affect air travel across the nation.

However, aviation experts said the longer planes are grounded and kept from landing at LAX, the more likely travel across the country will be delayed.

“It still may be too early to see the impact,” said David White, a spokesman for Flightstats.com, a website that monitors departures and arrivals across the country.

A man with a high-powered rifle opened fire Friday morning in Terminal 3, killing a Transportation Security Administration employee and wounding others, officials said.

Within a few minutes, the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a ground stop, halting arrivals and departures at the airport. Some flights into LAX were diverted to Ontario International Airport. Some flights from the Bay Area were canceled.

LAX served 63 million passengers last year.
