Micro 3-D printer reaches Kickstarter goal of $50,000 in 11 minutes

It didn’t take long for the M3D Micro, a 3-D printer, to reach its crowdfunding goal of $50,000 when it launched Monday on Kickstarter. It only took 11 minutes, to be exact.

The new Kickstarter project has only been on the website for a few hours but already it seems well on its way to raising much more than M3D was hoping for. The Micro has already raised more than $400,000, and it will continue to collect pledges on Kickstarter until May 7.

The Micro is a 3-D printer designed with the general consumer in mind. The Micro is a cube small enough to sit on users’ desks, comes in several playful colors and it is currently available for Kickstarter users who pledge at least $299.

That’s the opposite of many other 3-D printers currently on the market. Although these kinds of tech products have been catching on in recent years, many 3-D printers remain unattractive to general consumers because of their large size, clunky design and hefty price tags.

M3D said it believes it was able to meet its goal so quickly after showcasing the device at a 3-D printing event a few months ago where it gained a large following.

The small device, which weighs 2.2 pounds, is capable of printing objects as tall as 4.6 inches. A video on its Kickstarter page shows the device printing cookie cutters, a small flower vase and a hook for a shower curtain.
