A wacky way to get Apple’s new iOS 6 Passbook app to work

Share

One of the great new features on iOS 6 and the iPhone 5 is a new app called Passbook, but for a lot of people who updated their devices with the new operating system, the app simply won’t work.

In theory, Passbook will let you keep digital passes in one location. When you open the app, you get a screen saying you can use Passbook to store digital copies of flight boarding passes, event tickets and coupons.

Target on Thursday announced it would support mobile coupons on Passbook. Fandango will also allow people to use Passbook for some movie tickets, and the MLB announced that four of its teams will support the new app for their remaining home games this season.

But as great as that sounds, many people haven’t been able to get the app to function.

At the bottom of the app, there is a button that says App Store, which is the only thing you can click. But when it is clicked, many people simply see a page that says “Cannot connect to iTunes store” rendering the app useless.

Apple has yet to fix, or address, this problem, but fortunately, a solution, albeit wacky, has emerged.

According to Macworld, here’s what you can do to fix this problem and start using Passbook:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Go to “General”
  • Go to “Date & Time”
  • Switch the “Automatically” setting to off
  • Go to “Date & Time”
  • Fast forward the time to a year from now (so 2013)
  • Go back to Passbook and click the App Store button once again
  • It should work
  • Go back to the Settings app, “General,” “Date & Time” and turn the “Automatically” setting back to on
