Apple leaving 30-pin dock connector for smaller port, report says
Apple is working on a smaller dock connector for the next iPhone, according to a report.
The Cupertino, Calif., company is planning on ditching its 30-pin connector that works with the iPhone, iPad and iPods for a smaller 19-pin connector.
The new port, which is said to be about the same size as a Thunderbolt port, would be the first time an iPhone changes its dock connector, but as TechCrunch -- which reported the news -- points out, a small connector would allow Apple to save space in its phone design.

TechCrunch said it confirmed the change by speaking with three separate manufacturers. It also added that third-party manufacturers of iPhone accessories are going through an unsure time as they continue making 30-pin connectors but have no certainty as to whether a change will occur.
If it does, it would likely come in October as that’s where most Apple observers have been placing the arrival of the next iPhone.
Along with a change in its dock connector, the iPhone 5 has also been rumored to be receiving a newly designed speaker grill, a different back cover and antenna that are molded into one piece, and most notably, a larger screen.
Over the last two months, various reports have come out saying the iPhone 5 will ditch the standard iPhone 3.5-inch screen and get a bump up to 4 inches. If it does, it’d be the first iPhone to come in with a different sized screen.
