Google expanding its superfast Fiber broadband service to Austin?

Residents in Austin, Texas may soon find out just how fast 1 gigabit Internet connection is like.

Austin city officials and Google, which has been testing its ultra-fast Internet service called Fiber in Kansas City, have sent out invitations to an event Tuesday morning where they “will make a very important announcement that will have a positive impact on Austinites and the future of the city.”

Multiple news websites and blogs report that the announcement will be about the expansion of Fiber to Austin. The service now is available only in the Kansas City area.

Many on the Web are excited about the prospects of Google Fiber’s continued growth because the service promises Internet speeds “100 times faster than today’s broadband” -- speeds not offered by many other services in the U.S.

In Kansas City, Google Fiber costs $70 a month and includes 1 terabyte of cloud storage for users. There’s also a $120-a-month option that includes HD TV service and a Nexus 7 tablet. A free option is also available that provides Internet access “at today’s average speeds.”

Tuesday’s announcement in Austin is scheduled for 11 a.m. CDT.
