‘Angry Birds’ maker Rovio thinks pig, unwraps game ‘Bad Piggies’

Just when you thought Rovio couldn’t milk any more games out of its wildly popular “Angry Birds” franchise, along comes a press release announcing a new game called “Bad Piggies” slated for release on Sept. 27.

In this game, instead of playing as the Angry Birds fighting the egg-stealing Green Pigs, you get to play from the Green Pigs’ perspective in what Rovio says is an entirely new type of game play with “not a slingshot in sight.”

“We’ve had a lot of fun creating a totally new and unique gameplay experience,” said Petri Järvilehto, EVP Games at Rovio in a statement. “There’s so much more to these pigs than what is seen in the Angry Birds games, and Bad Piggies is the first glimpse into what’s going on in the imaginative and ingenious minds of the pigs.”

The Finnish company offers few additional specifics about what that the “Bad Piggies” game play will look like, but a promotional video for the new game features an angry bird coming under attack from dozens of green pig heads that appear to be falling from the sky.

Is that just a cute video or is there a clue in there?

“Bad Piggies” will be Rovio’s third game launch of 2012. In March, the company updated the “Angry Birds” franchise by sending the birds through a wormhole and into outer space, where the game play looked familiar, but there was a whole new set of physics to work with. The game, “Angry Birds Space,” hit 10 million downloads in just three days.

Then in July, Rovio introduced “Amazing Alex,” an entirely new game that revolves around a curious little boy, Alex, who builds Rube Goldberg-esque contraptions in order to complete simple tasks like cleaning his room. In the game, players can use soccer balls, toy cars, tilting shelves, scissors, magnets, pails and boxing gloves to accomplish a task.

“Bad Piggies” is coming to iOS, Android and Mac on Sept. 27. The company says versions for Windows Phone, Windows 8 and PC versions will be available soon after.
