Three people are dead and a fourth is hospitalized after shootings in Compton, Huntington Park and Lake Forest, sheriff’s deputies said Wednesday.

Two people were shot in Compton early New Year’s Day, leaving a mother dead and a man critically wounded.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to the 2200 block of West 154th Street at 12:40 a.m. after receiving a report of a shooting.

Deputies found a woman and a man who had both been shot in the chest, said Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez, a department spokeswoman. The woman died at a hospital. The man was in critical condition Wednesday.

Violent crime in Los Angeles declined for the second consecutive year in 2019, which was the 10th consecutive year the city saw fewer than 300 homicides.

A person of interest who had been “in a dating relationship” with the woman was detained, the sheriff’s department said. That man was not injured.

The slain woman’s two children, between the ages of 10 and 14, were present when their mother was shot but were not injured, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The incident was not gang-related, the department said. No gun was recovered.

Detectives were also investigating the shooting death of a man Tuesday night in the 3000 block of Hill Street in Huntington Park. After receiving a call about the shooting around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, sheriff’s deputies found a man on a sidewalk who had multiple gunshot wounds in his chest. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspects were described as two men who wore dark clothing and might have occupied a four-door black or dark colored sedan that was seen fleeing west on Hill Street.

Anyone with information about the shootings should call the L.A. County sheriff’s homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500.

The latest shooting death was reported in the Orange County city of Lake Forest.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to an alley in a residential area near 2nd Street and Village Drive at about 1:25 a.m. Wednesday, where they found a man about 20 years old who had been shot and was not breathing.

Orange County sheriff’s detectives are investigating; no suspect is in custody. Anyone with information about the Orange County shooting is asked to call (714) 647-7000.
