A man was arrested Wednesday night at a Long Beach home after authorities found two people suffering from gunshot wounds near the residence.

One of the wounded people, a woman, later died at a hospital, and the other, a man, was in critical condition Wednesday night after being shot near the 1600 block of West 19th Street, authorities said.

According to preliminary information, officers on patrol near Santa Fe Avenue and West 19th Street heard gunshots, prompting them to canvass the area.

They soon discovered the two victims, each wounded in the upper body, said Shaunna Dandoy, a Long Beach police public information officer. Both were taken to a hospital by the Long Beach Fire Department, Dandoy said.

Officers set up a perimeter around a home where the suspected shooter was believed to be inside, and the man surrendered to police, Dandoy said.

After the wounded woman died late Wednesday evening, detectives began investigating the incident as a homicide, Dandoy said.

Authorities believe the suspect and victims knew each other, but the motive and events leading up to the shooting are still under investigation, Dandoy said. Detectives were still at the home late Wednesday night.

No further details about the victims or the suspect were available.

A woman was also taken into custody at the home, but her involvement in the incident was unclear, Dandoy said.
