Freddy Cole

In the autumn of his career, 80-year-old singer-pianist Cole has earned widening recognition for gifts that resemble but also stand distinct from the work of his famous brother, Nat ¿King¿ Cole. Like his elder brother, Freddy Cole happens to be doubly fluent as jazz pianist and vocal interpreter, a man at ease behind the keyboard and in front of the microphone. But Freddy Cole's voice is grainier and grittier than his brother's silken tenor, and this only adds interest to his art. Lately, the Jazz Showcase has become a kind of home-away-from-home for the former Chicagoan, who always draws a large and welcoming audience. He'll lead a quartet. 8 and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 4, 8 and 10 p.m. Sunday; at the Jazz Showcase, 806 S. Plymouth Court; $25; 312-360-0234 or
