One thing to know about our book club
We are the Jay Stream Middle School Book Club. We started in 2003, and we all are, or have been, staff members at Jay Stream Middle School in Carol Stream.
We meet monthly from September through May. Every so often, we take field trips to enhance our reading selection and to have some fun. We went on the Frank Lloyd Wright walking tour to coincide with reading "Loving Frank," and we've gone to see movies based on books we've read.
Authors we have met
Tony Romano joined our discussion of his book "When the World Was Young," and Farah Ahmedi, author of "The Story of My Life: An Afghan Girl on the Other Side of the Sky," visited our school and spoke with our students about her experience.
"The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Schaffer and Annie Barrows, "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" by Betty Smith, "Loving Frank" by Nancy Horan, "When the World Was Young" by Tony Romano and "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett.
We didn't like
"The Elegant Gathering of White Snows" by Kris Radish.
"Wild" by Cheryl Strayed, "Return to Wake Robin" by Marnie O. Mamminga, "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston and "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn.
