Dodgers shutting them out
The Dodgers went a long way to earn a 2-0 win over the Brewers in a Costa Mesa Little League Majors Division game.
The Dodgers scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Brewers in the longest game of the season.
The Dodgers’ Evan Larsen struck out 15 of 19 batters he faced and allowed just one walk before reaching his pitch count limit in the bottom of the sixth. He was relieved by Daniel Morales, who ended the game with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth.
Larsen also started the Dodgers’ ninth-inning rally with a triple and then scored on a passed ball.
William Leiby, who walked, scored on an RBI single by Frankie Rodriguez.
Dodgers 3, Mariners 0: The Dodgers ended a three-game losing streak by defeating the National Mariners on April 27. Dodgers starting pitcher Daniel Morales pitched three innings and struck out six of 10 batters he faced and reliever Evan Larsen threw three innings and struck out seven of 11. Larsen had an RBI single in the top of the first inning that scored Johnny Blommer, who had singled. A fourth-inning single by Blommer sent Brandon Olguin to third and Olguin scored on a passed ball. The Dodgers scored their final run in the sixth when William Leiby hit a lead-off single, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice by Chandler Littley and scored when Frankie Rodriguez doubled for his second hit of the game.
Newport Beach Little League Majors Division Jack’s Surfboards wins four straight Jack’s Surfboards ran its win streak to four games Tuesday by defeating Proball, 12-6.
Starter Morgan Mannon threw four strong innings to get the win and Ryan Burgoyne closed out the final two innings. Mannon also was potent on offense with a three for four performance that included a pair of triples and three runs scored. Other key Jack’s hitters were Collin Brandenberger, who went three for three with two runs scored, Nick Sperr, who doubled twice and Nick Fox with a single and double. Drew Peterson and Tanner Smith also singled.
Proball’s offense was paced by Trent Attyah with two hits and Garrett Schwab, who singled and tripled.
The win upped Jack’s record to 11-2.
Jack’s Surfboards 9, Arch Bay Capital 8: Conner Bock went three for three and struck out 10 in the first four innings as Jack’s edged Arch Bay Capital.
Morgan Mannon doubled and tripled, Cole Funsten had an RBI triple and Brenden Hueston and Nick Fox both singled and scored twice.
For Arch Bay, Jason Neiger singled and scored and Robby Hurst, Tommy Winkle and Kevin Cox had hits during a late rally that fell short.
Jack’s Surfboards 12, City National Bank 2: Morgan Mannon got the pitching win by scattering four hits to Robby Rosoff, Donato Difernando, Kevin McCarthy and David Berman, to go along with six strikeouts in four innings. Closer Nick Sperr struck out four in the final two innings. Jack’s offense was led by Nick Fox, who had a triple, three walks and two runs scored, Sperr with a single and three walks, Drew Peterson and Cole Funsten had key hits and Jonathan Epstein reached base three times and had a two-RBI single.
Jack’s Surfboards 12, VFW 2: Eyeing its 10th win of the season, Jack’s traveled south Saturday to Laguna Beach Little League’s Riddle Field and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Conner Bock opened the game with a line-drive home-run over the center-field wall. Ryan Burgoyne started on the mound for Jack’s and gave up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Bock, in a relief role, struck out 12 and allowed a single walk over the next four innings.
On offense for Jack’s, Burgoyne went two for two, Nick Fox, Brenden Hueston and Justin Bleiweis had RBI singles and in the top of the sixth, Morgan Mannon hit a lead-off triple, Cole Funsten followed with a double and Collin Brandenberger delivered an RBI single before Bock capped a big, all-around performance by hitting his second home run of the game.
Verizon 5, McMonigle 4: The Blower boys ignited a two-game win streak for Verizon when 10-year-old Charlie Blower laid down an RBI bunt to tie the score, then 12-year-old Jack Blower homered over the right-field fence for the winning run Saturday.
Conner Bass had a sacrifice RBI and closed for Verizon. He and fellow pitchers Alex Lee and Fritz Miller combined to hold McMonigle to two hits.
Verizon 6, Arch Bay Capital 5: The winning feeling carried over to Monday for Verizon which registered its second one-run victory in three days.
Fritz Miller’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth tied the score and Hayden Valli’s bouncer up the middle drove in the winning run. Miller also pitched 4 1/3 innings and was backed by the defensive play of Jack Blower, Garrett Wayne and Tanner Epp. Wayne had three of Verizon’s nine hits.
Nick Borquez pitched a complete game for Arch Bay and shortstop Jason Neiger made several outstanding plays.
AAA Division Team Murray 11, Dr. DiGiovanni 10: Luke Hubbs went three for three with an RBI and drove in two runs, including the game-winner.
Nick Ursini also drove in two runs, Tristan Lee went three for three with a double, Ryan Machoskie had an RBI and played solid defense, Nick Bergsma scored twice, Will Black stole home, Mikey Ruiz made an infield double-play and first baseman Nick Smith had a strong defensive game for Team Murray.
Newport Harbor Baseball Assn. Bronco Division Kincaid 10, Big Belly Deli 5:David Fisher turned in an outstanding performance and Toby Bush had an RBI for Kincaid which used a four-run first-inning to get past Big Belly Deli.
Second baseman Davis Hanscom of Big Belly Deli had one of the game’s top defensive plays when he ended the third inning with an impressive, over-the-shoulder diving catch to stop a Kincaid scoring rally.
Newport Harbor Baseball Assn. Mustang Division Barkate Orthodontics 5, Wells Fargo 3: Clutch hitting by John Olmstead and Vincent Rubino lifted Barkate Orthodontics to a win Tuesday at Bob Henry field.
Olmstead hit safely in both plate appearances and Rubino went two for three. Benjamin Kwong and Matthew Weiss also drove in runs.
Wells Fargo closed to within two runs on a two-run homer by Sean Waterman in the fifth inning, but Barkate pitcher Ryan Brosnan struck out the side in the top of the sixth to halt the comeback attempt.
Michael Davey got Wells Fargo on the scoreboard with an RBI in the second inning, Jack Allen went two for three and Dillon McArdell led a double play.
