LACMA to open earlier, close earlier starting July 1

In a move that was announced as a way to better accommodate visitors, LACMA announced a change to its hours of operation effective on July 1.

Whereas now the museum opens at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, LACMA will instead open at 11 a.m. for any would-be attendees who want to get an early start. And if an after-dinner visit to the museum galleries was part of your mid-week plan, you’ll be out of luck because LACMA will close at 5 p.m. instead of 8.

Weekends will also see some changes, with Fridays making the switch from the twilight-adjacent hours of noon to 9 p.m. to opening at 11 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m. A similar shift also takes place on Saturdays and Sundays, with museum hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. instead of the current 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The move will not have an impact on LACMA’s jazz and film series -- it applies only to the permanent galleries, not programs. Planned dates with Gerald Wilson, Slumgum and Nick Mancini in jazz and a September screening of Christian Marclay’s “The Clock” (full lineup for both are available at LACMA’s website) are unchanged.

The museum announced that its restaurant Ray’s and Stark Bar will continue to be open late.

In addition, the museum will continue to offer free admission for L.A. County residents from 3 to 5 p.m. on weekdays for those still looking for an afternoon visit.
