Helen Mirren wins another award for playing Queen Elizabeth II

Helen Mirren keeps winning awards for playing Queen Elizabeth II.

The actress won multiple trophies, including an Oscar in 2007, for her role in “The Queen.” Earlier this year, she collected an Olivier Award -- London’s equivalent of the Tony Award -- for playing the British monarch in “The Audience,” the recent play by “The Queen” screenwriter Peter Morgan that ran on the West End.

On Sunday, Mirren collected yet another honor -- Britain’s prestigious Evening Standard Theatre Award for “The Audience.” The actress was in London to attend the ceremony, which was held at the Savoy Hotel. The play spans several decades as Queen Elizabeth II holds her ritual audiences with the current British prime minister.

“The Audience” was broadcast to cinemas around the world this year, and there’s been talk about a Broadway transfer, though no official announcement has been made. Stephen Daldry directed the play on the West End.

The Evening Standard award for best actor was shared by Adrian Lester and Rory Kinnear, who appeared in Shakespeare’s “Othello” at the National Theatre.

The evening’s honorees also included Maggie Smith, who received the Evening Standard Icon Award for her lifetime contribution to the stage.

Seth Numrich, the young American actor who appeared alongside Kim Cattrall in “Sweet Bird of Youth” at the Old Vic, was named outstanding newcomer. Kevin Spacey, who heads the Old Vic, was also honored for his contributions to British theater.

“Chimerica,” a drama about a photographer’s quest to find the man who stood up to a line of tanks during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, won the award for best play. The award for best director went to Richard Eyre for a revival of Ibsen’s “Ghosts” that starred Mike Leigh-regular Lesley Manville.

“Merrily We Roll Along,” by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth, won the award for best musical. The revival production debuted at the Menier Chocolate Factory and then transferred to the West End.

Sunday’s award ceremony was hosted by “Homeland” actor Damian Lewis. The awards are organized by the Evening Standard, the British tabloid, and its owner, Evgeny Lebedev.
