Crafts unions reach new deal with major producers
Major producers and unions representing various crafts workers in the film and TV business have negotiated a new labor contract.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said it had reached an agreement on a new three-year deal with the Basic Crafts Unions, whose members include electricians, plumbers, utility workers, location managers and studio drivers.
Modeled on a similar contract recently struck by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, the new contract provides a 2% annual wage increase and additional funding for the unions’ health plan.
“I believe the tentative agreement is fair and equitable for both parties,” said Leo T. Reed, chairman of the Basic Crafts negotiating committee. “It is my sincere desire to keep as much production in Los Angeles as possible.”
The AMPTP said: “The deals will help keep productions working without interruption in the Los Angeles area ... as the industry continues to adapt to the challenges of producing in today’s market.”
The new contract takes effect Aug. 1.
