Oscars 2014: Academy includes Sarah Jones ‘In Memoriam’

Share

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences included Sarah Jones, the camera assistant who was killed on the set of “Midnight Rider” a little more than a week ago, in the Oscars in memoriam tribute on Sunday. But just barely.

Sources close to the academy told the Los Angeles Times last week that Jones would likely not be included in the slide show and said her name would be added only to an extended in memoriam list on the academy’s website.

However, Jones’ photo and name appeared on the broadcast just before cutting to commercials following Bette Midler’s performance. On the in memoriam photo gallery on the Oscar’s official website, Jones appears on slide No. 37 of the 111 honored.

When Jones, 27, was killed by a freight train while filming near Jesup, Ga., more than 55,000 people signed an online petition to have her included in the tribute.

Her death triggered an outpouring of tributes from crew members from around the world, with more than 30,000 people posting comments and pictures of Sarah’s name written on film slates in a “Slates for Sarah” social media campaign.
