Oscars 2014: McConaughey says, ‘All right, all right, all right’

“All right, all right, all right.”

These words from the 1993 film “Dazed and Confused” put Matthew McConaughey on the map as an actor -- and returned Sunday night as he took the stage to accept his best actor Oscar for “Dallas Buyers Club.”

After thanking the motion picture academy -- “all 6,000 members,” fellow nominees and “Dallas Buyers Club’s” director and cast members -- a humbled McConaughey listed the three things he needs each day: “something to look up to” (God), “something to look forward to” (his family) and “someone to chase” (himself in 10 years).

And added, “All right, all right, all right.”

He has included that famous phrase in his many memorable acceptance speeches this awards season.

His secret? “If I start with ‘All right, all right, all right’ and ‘Thank you,’ I really can’t go wrong,” he explained in a February appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

“This is unexpected but graciously accepted,” he said at the Golden Globes.

“I’m so glad [‘Dallas Buyers Club’] got passed on so many times, really glad … or it wouldn’t have come to me,” he said, on the “underdog” film getting turned down 86 times before finally getting made.

“There’s a magic place that we as actors can get, or really strive to get to,” he said at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. “And you know we don’t always get there, but boy, when we touch it, it’s magic.”

He ended the SAG speech by drawing on words of wisdom he received from a man who escaped Russia via a 17-foot boat he built and sailed across the ocean.

“A genius can be anybody he wants to, but a genius is always one person at a time,” McConaughey said.
