Early days

McQueen's steely blue eyes and edgy cool exterior were part of the persona that made him a superstar in the '60s and '70s. He had had a rough youth that included time at the California Junior Boys Republic, a reform school in Chino, a stint in the Marines and various odd jobs until he finally found his calling with acting. Before his '60s run, he starred in the television western "Wanted: Dead or Alive" (1958-1961) and the cult horror film "The Blob."
