John Kennedy Toole

Death: March 26, 1969 Post-death success: Toole committed suicide more than a decade before his book, "A Confederacy of Dunces," was released. The hero of the book, Ignatius J. Reilly, struggles to gain acceptance in modern New Orleans and still lives with his mother at the age of 30 (that’s an extreme shortening). In 1981, the book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. There have been numerous attempts to adapt the book for film.
