‘Gone Girl’ casting: Rosamund Pike to star opposite Ben Affleck?

Hey “Gone Girl” fans, if all goes as planned, meet the big-screen version of Amy Dunne: Rosamund Pike.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the British actress who most recently starred opposite Tom Cruise in “Jack Reacher,” has the offer to play the duplicitous wife who goes missing on the couple’s fifth wedding anniversary, putting the husband, to be played by Ben Affleck, at the center of the investigation.

(A spokesman for 20th Century Fox, the studio behind the film, said there is no deal yet in place.)

Pike, 34, is an interesting choice for the role. Though the actress played a Bond girl in 2002’s “Die Another Day,” and appeared in a number of British films including “An Education,” “Made in Dagenham” and the Paul Giamatti-starrer “Barney’s Version,” she is not yet a household name in the States.

She will next appear in Edgar Wright’s “The World’s End.”

For the David Fincher-directed film, her relative anonymity could be an asset. The book, written by Gillian Flynn, is told via the competing viewpoints of Nick and Amy Dunne, two unreliable narrators who shift the reader’s perspective as they tell their sides of the tale. Accordingly, the role of Amy Dunne is quite complex, a mysterious wife who is not as she seems. As something of an unknown quantity, the actress will have an easier time manipulating the audience.

Other actresses the Hollywood Reporter says were up for the role, including Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman and Emily Blunt, are almost too well known to take on such a part.

Flynn is writing the adaptation of the book for Fincher, who is scheduled to begin production this September.

Reese Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard production company will produce along with Leslie Dixon.
